Organizing Your Life (The Cleaning Plan)
The start of the new year is a brand new opportunity to get our lives organized. We can clean our homes, declutter our lives and become the versions of ourselves that we envision and aspire to be.
For this new year, we can make keeping a clean home a reachable goal by creating a master plan for the year. We will call this the “Cleaning Plan.” There are three parts to our plan.
Some examples: do the dishes, make the beds, sweep the floors, wipe down counters, take out the trash
These examples may vary based on your home. One way to make the daily tasks less stressful is to delegate chores to other family members. Ask your spouse to be responsible for the dishes every other day or have your son sweep the kitchen floors each night before bed.
2) Make a weekly plan for things that need to be handled every single week, and then pick a reliable day during the week that you can commit to an hour or so of cleaning. Sunday afternoon may be a good day to set aside a little time to pick up before the new work week begins.
Some examples: wash sheets, mop floors, do laundry, wipe down kitchen appliances
3) Create a seasonal plan that has needs to be taken care of every few months. These may vary based on each season (such as cleaning out the fireplace or bringing down your winter jackets from the attic). Every few months refer back to this list and see what needs to be marked off for the next few months.
Some examples: wash comforters, sweep/vacuum behind heavy furniture, rid pantry of expired food, clean gutters
It is important to create lists so that we can organize our lives and actually reach our goal of keeping our homes clean this year. Take this opportunity to also organize your life in other ways… Create a budget and make weekly shopping lists. Declutter your closet and clean out the fridge. Go through the stack of papers on your desk that you have been avoiding for months.
This is a new year with endless opportunities to better organize our lives. The key to keeping things clean is to do a little each day. Take control of your life and keep that control every day of the year.
Happy New Year!
